Prior to the main event, a courtesy call was made to the Vice-Chancellor’s office by Ms. Grace Ateka, the Head of the Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratory at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). During the meeting, discussions centered on potential collaborations between KEBS and Chuka University, particularly in the application of safe nuclear energy technologies in agriculture, food safety, and soil and water management. The talks also explored opportunities for joint development of short training courses and the accreditation of university laboratories, highlighting the university’s growing role in advancing applied research and capacity building in nuclear science and technology.
The career day featured three distinguished speakers who shared their expertise and inspired students with real-world applications of physics. Ms. Grace Ateka gave a motivational talk on her career journey in radiation science, emphasizing the critical role of mentorship, networking, and determination in navigating a male-dominated profession. She provided an in-depth look at career opportunities for physics graduates in institutions such as KEBS, KENGEN, and international bodies like the IAEA, urging students to pursue excellence and seize every opportunity.
Also present in person was Mr. Evans Ojwak, a Senior Medical Physicist from Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), who delivered a compelling presentation on the role of medical physics in healthcare. He discussed the application of physics in cancer treatment, radiology, and radiation safety, noting the increasing demand for specialized training and the vital contribution of physicists in modern medicine.
Joining the event virtually was Mr. Collins Omondi, Head of Civil Applications at the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE). He highlighted the peaceful applications of nuclear energy in areas such as power generation, industrial development, and natural resource management. His talk also delved into policy frameworks like the Pelindaba Treaty and the role of AFCONE in promoting nuclear safety, security, and cooperation across the African continent.
Physics Career Day 2025 provided students with a dynamic platform to interact with professionals, seek mentorship, and better understand the diverse career opportunities in physics. The event underscored the department’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and preparing graduates to take up critical roles in national development and global scientific advancement.
