GIZ Mentorship Session Inspires Chuka University Students to Explore Careers in Clean Energy

As part of Chuka University’s Annual Career Day and Mentorship Program, students had the opportunity to engage with two distinguished guests from GIZ Kenya in a session themed “From Classroom to Clean Energy: Physics and Chemistry Career Pathways in the Energy Sector.”
The event, held on Thursday, 23rd October 2025, was organized by Prof. Paul Kamweru, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, and brought together students from Physics, Chemistry, and other disciplines interested in exploring career opportunities within the energy sector.
The mentorship dialogue featured Mr. Peter Waihenya, Technical Advisor at GIZ Kenya with expertise in renewable energy, green hydrogen, and energy policy, and Dr. Sarah Lena, Energy Advisor at GIZ Kenya and a recent PhD Chemistry graduand passionate about sustainable energy innovation and mentorship.
Dr. Lena shared her inspiring academic and professional journey, recounting how, during her university holidays, she visited industries related to chemistry to understand the skills required in industrial practice. This early exposure helped her connect classroom learning with real-world applications and shaped her academic focus, eventually leading her to pursue a PhD in Chemistry.
She encouraged students to seek early industry exposure, utilize academic breaks to visit workplaces and research centers, and let curiosity guide their academic and professional growth. By doing so, she noted, students can identify the skills and knowledge demanded by modern industries, preparing them for both advanced studies and impactful careers.
In his address, Mr. Waihenya recounted his progression from studying Physics in the United Kingdom to serving in professional roles at the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) and the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) before joining GIZ Kenya. His story underscored the importance of continuous learning, innovation, and adaptability in today’s dynamic job market. He advised students to remain open to acquiring new skills, embrace emerging technologies, and adapt to the rapidly evolving renewable energy landscape. He emphasized that personal and professional growth often requires stepping beyond one’s comfort zone and pursuing opportunities that contribute to Kenya’s green energy transition.
Both speakers highlighted the significance of mentorship and networking, urging students to actively seek guidance from professionals and peers to refine their goals and explore collaborative opportunities within the energy field.
Staff members from the Physics Section including Dr. Elosy Gatkaa, Mr. Njogu Samson, Dr. Antony Odek, and Dr. Martin Mutie also participated in the session, offering additional guidance and encouragement to the students. The event inspired participants to envision how their training in Physics and Chemistry can be applied to clean energy solutions, research, and sustainable innovation further reaffirming Chuka University’s commitment to empowering learners through mentorship, career development, and industry engagement.
